Here is an insightful tete-a-tete with Priyanka:

  1. What has been your experience at work here at Alcor – please elaborate on self-motivation, team dynamics, people strengths etc.

Alcor is a fantastic place to work, comprising of transparent leadership and incredible company culture. The focus on work-life balance is remarkable here and I can’t imagine myself working anywhere else. People at Alcor are great – willing to help, passionate and really caring about what they are doing. Each day here brings a new and exciting challenge – a journey worth treading!

Senior leadership team at Alcor always puts employees first and care about their overall wellbeing. The positive workplace culture at Alcor is a great driving force and motivation for me to stay productive. I love my job so much so that I look forward to coming to office every single day.

  1. Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian? Alcor feels more like a family than just a bunch of employees. We’re friends at work and outside of work, irrespective of the regions we are working in. I just love being surrounded by enthusiastic and skilled people. I feel like this is a great workplace to boost your career path and personal development.

Leaders are easily approachable, they treat every employee equally, and stay true to their word. After completing two years at Alcor, I still feel that the message conveyed to me on the very first day of my joining holds true to this date – be it respecting your feedback, offering opportunities to work on exciting projects and travel for work, or expanding learning horizon.

Every employee here is heard and respected for what they have to say. Active and open communication channel between employees, teams, and superiors is what helps Alcor stand out.

  1. What’s been that one defining moment for you at Alcor where you felt happy, successful and motivated?

My journey with Alcor began two years back and since then there have been countless such moments. Getting great opportunities to prove myself at work and enhance my learning is truly motivating for me. I am happy to explore my strengths and capabilities.

Initially involved with only the MSP team, I now support three teams  – MSP, ITOM and team responsible for one of our premier clients. I was elated when I was given an opportunity to work as a consultant for ITSM and I loved being part of those projects.

Getting constant encouragement from leadership to complete relevant certifications is very rarely seen in our industry. I still cherish the day when I was appreciated to clear my very first ServiceNow Service Admin Certification (CSA Snow). That was the day when my passion to get relevant certifications really got pumped.

  1. Who is Priyanka? How can you best describe yourself? What motivates you? What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?

I would describe myself as a confident and adaptable person who loves communicating with people and discussing solutions to business problems. I feel satisfied and joyful while working, analyzing complex business data, and drawing clear and simple conclusions that simplify work.

My family – an inseparable part of mine – holds the utmost importance in my life. A mom of a 6-year-old girl, I would say that being a mom feels wonderful. It’s what gives me a purpose to do better today than what I did yesterday and fills my heart with joy and affection. In my spare time I love doing experimental cooking, watching horror movies or series, and surfing the internet to learn more about various software and latest project management articles.

A zeal to enhance my knowledge base and skills keeps me motivated. I thrive on challenges and constantly set goals for myself, so I have something to strive towards – it could be a certification or training course. Too tough a person to get demotivated, I only get discouraged when I’m unable to match my own set of expectations for a particular task.

5.When you hear the word, Alcor- which 3 words strike you?

Nimble – Agile and adaptable, Alcor has a constant willingness to course-correct and rethink strategies, processes, and approaches.

Tino Features In Alcor’s Employee Success Feature | Congratulations

Tino Solis is Alcor’s Featured Employee for March 2020! Tino, IT Manager – Consulting at Alcor Solutions, Inc. evaluates his own success by the success of his team and loves solving business problems that incorporate people, process, and technology. A total family man and a goofy dad at heart, Tino is also an avid outdoor cook.

Ziying Magic Tan, Principal – Alcor Solutions, Inc says, “Tino has brought great consulting skills and leadership to our team from day one and is spearheading one of our fastest growing ITSM offerings. His team first attitude has influenced everyone around him and made a huge impact on Alcor’s success with our strategic customers. During this trying time, he continues to demonstrate leadership and commitment to excellence in everything he does.  We are grateful to have Tino on our team and look forward to a fruitful journey ahead together”.

Pamela Morris, Senior Manager, Consulting adds, “Tino has been such a committed and reliable partner on all the initiatives of which I’ve had the pleasure of working with him. He has the ability to not only handle multiple roles from Engagement Manager to writing detailed documents all while building a great team culture among his peers and those working for him. He can handle intense deadlines with grace as demonstrated when he recently moved across country with complete dedication to a very strategic client and then shortly after had twin babies! I’m so happy to see Tino recognized for his dedication and quality; he truly exemplifies the Alcor culture!”

Here is an insightful tete-a-tete with Tino:

  1. What has been your experience at work here at Alcor?

My experience working at Alcor has been amazing! From great leaders and cooperative colleagues to pervasive team-first culture and plenty of opportunities to grow, there are multiple reasons that make Alcor a perfect workplace. The Leadership team here offers the best working environment and possesses great qualities of leading with vision, commitment, and empathy. I hope to acquire these leadership abilities to lead the people on my team. Talking about team dynamics, I just admire how everyone here works as a team rather than an isolated individual contributor. Every employee in this company, regardless of role, has been an absolute pleasure to work with as they understand the concept of a team mentality.

  1. Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian?

At Alcor, we have a quality of product and a quality of people that I love being associated with. I’m proud of the solutions that we offer our client base and the value we provide to each other, even amidst the chaos. It is highly commendable how Alcorians are always prepared to create a difference and help other team members to a degree that is worthy of being called quality work.

I feel blessed to be a part of this team and would say that – Anyone can offer Service management, but to make those service management efforts successful it takes the right partner that’s backed by honesty, integrity, and authenticity – and that’s who we are!

  1. What’s been that one defining moment for you at Alcor where you felt happy, successful, and motivated?

Well, there are actually quite a few. The one that stands out most in my mind would be – when I showed interest in the Elanco project and it was taken seriously. It motivated me because my leadership team was listening, which is perhaps one of the most understated skills out there. As we’re in the business of listening, seeing my leadership listening to me, taking my interests, my background, and my expertise in mind, it felt really good.

Another similar situation when I felt motivated and even flattered was when I was allowed to take a step further into leading a  SIAM team – for which SIAM is a potential new line of business. The ability to contribute to product creation and an Alcor offering is very fulfilling and rewarding for me. It’s like wow, my leadership trust me and listen to what I’ve to say.

  1. Who is Tino? How can you best describe yourself?

Professionally, I’m a Service Management Consultant who loves to solve business problems that incorporate people, process, and technology. Personally, I’m a total family man and a dad to the core – a goofy dad at heart, you can say!

I get motivated by being surrounded by people with an open mindset, people who listen, and people who encourage open communication. Other little things that motivate me are – little tokens of appreciation, be it just an email from somebody or a conversation. On the other hand, the demotivating factor for me is the closed mindset – when people aren’t taking what you’ve to say seriously or are just listening for the sake of responding as opposed to listening to the message I’m trying to convey.

Outside of being a goofball dad day-to-day, I’m an avid outdoor cook. I like to smoke meats, I like to barbeque, I smoke vegetables – I love all things cooking outside. Besides that I’m also passionate about spending time on Wikipedia. When traveling, cruise ships are my place to be because they allow me to go everywhere and at the same time go nowhere.

  1. When you hear the word, Alcor- which 3 words strike you?
  • People – The value add of our brand
  • Authenticity – Pervasive in our culture
  • Organizational Self Awareness – Spearheading with self-awareness of who we are as an organization and a belief that tomorrow we will be better than what we are today

Thanks for talking to us, Tino! Wishing you many more accolades ahead!

FAQs: How to Leverage Emergency Response Management Apps?

In partnership with Washington State Department of Health, ServiceNow released a no-charge community app, Emergency Response Operations, to help companies and governments implement critical workflows for emergency response and crisis management as they manage through COVID-19.

In addition, ServiceNow developed three no-cost community apps to benefit other organizations and governments fighting the pandemic. These apps are available now and will remain free of charge through September 30, 2020.

  • Emergency Outreach: During a crisis, this workflow leverages the Now Platform® to help companies connect with employees to assess the impact. Employers can reach out by email to provide information and safety measures and request a response to confirm if employees are safe, and where they are located. Employers can also leverage the ServiceNow Now Mobile App to send push notifications to employees via mobile to get response.
  • Emergency Self Report: This workflow helps an employee notify his/her employer that he/she is going into quarantine and when he/she can safely return to work. It provides workflow support for both the employer and employee and enables response teams to track employee reporting.
  • Emergency Exposure Management: When a company becomes aware that an employee has been diagnosed with an illness, this workflow helps the employer identify other employees who might have been exposed based on the employee’s meeting history and location.

Q: Are the apps really free?

A: The applications are free, and hosting is free until Sept 30, 2020.

Q: What happens on Sept 30?

A: ServiceNow will do separate enablement about converting/capturing a $500 hosting fee.

Q: Do any of these apps have pre-reqs for the customer to own any specific module(s)?

A: If you are an existing ServiceNow customer, you do not need a specific license or to use a specific application. All customers can use these apps regardless of their current contracts or entitlements from ServiceNow.

Q: How do I install the apps?

A: The apps are available on the ServiceNow Store and should already be available to install on one of your instances by having your ServiceNow Admin go to System Definition/Plugins.

Q: How do I give people the appropriate roles?

A: Ideally you will add the roles to specific groups. This will give each user the right level of access.

Q: If I need help who do I contact?

Someone from Alcor will be happy to get on a one-hour call and walk you through some of the key steps to get you up and running. This is a free service we are providing to any ServiceNow customers.

Steps to Deploy Python Flask & MySQL application on AWS Elastic Beanstalk

If you’re a developer and want to deploy your Flask based application on AWS Cloud without lots of manual intervention, then AWS Elastic Beanstalk is an easy-to-use service. It helps in deploying and at the same time scaling of web applications and services developed with Java, .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go, and Docker on familiar servers such as Apache, Nginx, Passenger, and IIS. In addition, we need not pay any additional charges for using Elastic Beanstalk –as we pay only for the AWS resources required for storing and running our applications.

Flask is a lightweight web application framework build on top of python. It can be integrated with a large number of extensions. Here are the some of the biggest sites created using the Flask framework: Pinterest, Twilio, Lyft, Patreon, etc.

Let’s see this in action:

In this blog, we’ll deploy a Flask &MySQL based web application. For that, we’ll create two environments – Development env. i.e. Cloud9 and Production env. i.e. EB.

Case 1: Deployment on Development Environment (Cloud9)

Cloud9 is a cloud IDE that is used for writing, running, and debugging code. First deploying our application on Cloud9, we need to launch our Cloud9 machine from the AWS console, as shown in image 1.

Then, after providing the configuration settings, AWS will spin up an Ubuntu-based IDE instance, as shown in image 2.

Once the IDE is running and you’re able to access it, it’s time to upload your application code in it (You can choose to build an application from scratch or take help from one of the open-source Github repositories). Instead of uploading your code, you may choose to zip your application code and drag and drop your folder, as shown in image 3. With Cloud9, you can run commands on the terminal and, at the same time, see your folder structure on the left to start development.

As our application is database-driven, it’s time to launch our RDS MySQL database, as shown in image 4. You can create a non-publicly accessible database and launch it in the same VPC where your Development Environment is running.

Now,though not a good practice, but to simplify the entire process, you can directly enter your database credentials within your code. However, in production environment,it is always advised to store your credentials in system variables and pass them within your code.

If you’re using Mysql with Flask, always declare a cursor class because that’s how you are going to fire queries. The cursor will hold records within the memory &Dict Cursor is a Cursor class that returns rows as dictionaries.

Before we proceed to test our application, we need to install certain packages. As we’re running our application on Ubuntu, below commands should meet our needs.

> pip3 install flask

> pip3 install wtforms

>sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient-dev

> pip3 install flask_mysqldb

> pip3 install passlib

Also, let’s define the host and post for our application:

if __name__ == ‘__main__’:

application.run(host=’0.0.0.0′,port=8080, debug=True)

As you can see,the port of application is 8080 but Cloud9 & Elastic Beanstalk can do port forwarding. So, now we can access our application from Port 80 i.e. HTTP.

We’ll openup our application.py file and click on the Run button. From the Preview, we can goto our application landing page, as in image 6.

The final results after deployment looks as in the image 7.

Great! Now let’s login to our application and see if our database was configured correctly.

Case 2:Deployment on Production Environment (EB)

Now that we have successfully deployed our application on the Dev environment, it’s time to deploy it over EB.But before that we need to take care of a few things:

We need to create a requirements.txt file and list all our application libraries. Thanks to the Pigar, which can generate requirements for the project. As shown in image 8,we need to run below commands on our Dev environment from the project root directory:

>pip3 install pigar

>pigar

Now that our requirements.txt has been created, let’s see what other prerequisites we have:

Elastic Beanstalk is able to find our application’s code very easily when we select application.py as the filename and enter a callable application object(in this case, the Flask object,). EB looks for an ‘application’ callable by default. That’s already been taken care of.

If you face 500 internal error, just declare a secret key below your application callable, as seen in image 9.

That’s all we need to do.Let’s download our application from Cloud9 environment& zip it in the root directory level. For that, we just need to select our files and child directories, and zip them.

Now it’s time to launch our Elastic Beanstalk instance. In the window that appears, just select Python as a platform, upload the code, and click on create an environment. As our application can communicate with our database, which is in the same VPC, no other configuration is required.Environment creation takes about 5 minutes and, finally, our application is up and running, as seen in image 10.

Let’s hit its URL!

As seen in image 11, this will open a browser window using the domain name created for your application. You would be able to see the same Flask website that you created and tested locally.

Hurray, you did it! In case you get stuck somewhere, start afresh – follow all the steps again and voila you’ll get the desired results.

It’s just been so exciting for me!

  1. What has been your work experience here at Alcor?

No two days are the same here! The work environment at Alcor is exciting, super charged, the work culture is awesome, and one can reach out to anyone in the organization for help, and the collaboration with the offshore team is wonderful. Having spent nearly 5 years here, I yet have so much to learn here!

  • Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian? Please elaborate in a couple of lines.

The exposure one gets at Alcor is awesome. I feel proud to work across multiple technologies- AWS, ServiceNow and more. Having worked on multiple ServiceNow modules and AWS, my experiential learnings have been immense here. Another pride factor for me is the approachability and transparency with the Management – very rarely seen in organizations today.

  • What’s been that one defining moment for you at Alcor where you felt happy, successful and motivated?

There have been multiple defining moments for me here! I did start as a developer but am moving steadily to an architect role! It has been wonderful to work on business opportunities. I got an opportunity to work on the pre-sales functions where we got great success with a retail giant in Japan and an alternative energy systems company out of United States. Both these opportunities have been motivating for me! The trust that clients have in me during the engagements has been another defining moment for me. One more to add! Winning the first Alcor hackathon was pivotal and the product been shortlisted at ServiceNow CreatorCon was my ‘ruby’ moment!

  • Who is Sushil? How can you best describe yourself?

For me, technology is all! I am focused and dedicated at my work. Am inclined towards reading across technology in my free time. Watching movies help me relax and I like to travel to new places with being a “big-time” foodie even if I am a vegan. Recognition motivates me to do better and set my bar higher. Last but not the least, family support in all that I do is very important!

  • When you hear the word, Alcor – which 3 words strike you?

– Great Culture

– Supporting Environment

– Integrity

Thank you for talking to us, Sushil! We wish you the very best in all you do!

  • What has been your experience working here at Alcor?

My experience of working here in Alcor has been great! The company’s environment is wonderful, the coworkers are friendly, the management and HR teams are approachable and transparent.
The reason Alcor is growing at a great pace is because of the quality of work it delivers to their client. We work proactively on issues and try to give the best solutions to the client. We have a very high CSAT score and get a lot of client appreciations.
Alcor is a company which has a vision and employees can see themselves growing along with this vision. We don’t work in silos; we are given opportunities to work and expand our knowledge in different areas as well.
Alcor conducts annual hackathons and we often work on product development and research; this also helps in pushing our limits and learn new and latest technologies. The employees are also recognized for the efforts they put in and are appreciated for their work in a public platform.
The seniors always have your back and you’re never left high and dry.

  • Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian?

I feel proud to be an Alcorian because of its culture, work and the vision. I can see myself growing and learning new things in a great environment where everyone is appreciated.

  • What’s been that one defining moment for you at Alcor where you felt happy, successful and motivated?

There has been many such moments, however if I have to choose one then I can say that the interaction which I had with the CEO and the Founder at the inception of my career here in Alcor paved a path for my professional success.
We shared our goals and company’s vision and realized that they were similar. Post that, I was placed in a team where my aspirations are taken care of and which challenged me to push my own limits. Since then, I have been given a chance to research and learn. I also got a chance to represent my company and give webinars to different regions around the globe. This was a new experience which motivated me and helped me to further expand my limits.

  • Who is Abbas? How can you best describe yourself?

I am a self-motivated individual who likes exploring and learning new things. Coming from a computer background, I love gadgets and like coding and learning new technologies.

I challenge myself to advance on a personal level. I take myself as competition and keep a track of where I was a month or a year back. I like to think out of the box and try to do things that distinguish me from the crowd. I draw inspiration from my father, Steve Jobs, Harvey Specter from Suits, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. I get demotivated by liars, dishonest, manipulating and unfaithful people.
I am a social person and like meeting new people and try to build a good rapport with them. I was involved in social activities during my college days and have good leadership experience of managing college clubs and societies. I am a creative person and like working on the Adobe Illustrator and do sketching in free time. I like watching Sitcoms, Action, and Drama TV Shows and likes listening to pop and alternative rock music.

Please tell us about your experience working at Alcor

I would just say that the last year and a half has been amazing at Alcor! I love this workplace for the recognition and appreciation you get from your peers and Executive team! It’s a positive work environment, and your hard work is always appreciated. As a Developer, I worked across multiple projects, which helped me in my self transformation journey to become a more capable and confident developer.

What makes you feel proud to be an Alcorian?

We work virtually, yet we have a strong bond at Alcor! I am proud of my colleagues and myself who have cherished this bond, and it continues to get stronger and better each day! Here at Alcor are given opportunities to explore new things and work across various projects. This helps us work across multiple teams and modules. I feel so proud to be an Alcorian!

Tell us about a few defining moments you had at Alcor.

I remember this one instance, where a project was not going quite well, but after a few integrations, correcting a few bugs and working together as a team, we were given kudos by the same client. This appreciation has been a defining moment for me.

Another case to point would be my own disbelief in myself actually writing and implementing a JAVA scripting internal cloud project POC. I had never done JAVA scripting, but my hard work and spirit to learn made me excel at this customer POC.

Tell us more about yourself: Who is Poojitha?

As a mother of a 2-year-old, I am and I need to be a 24X7 positive person. And an active one – too! I love experimenting in the kitchen and like playing badminton when I get the time and, of course, spending as much time as possible with my boy.

  2. Camaraderie – Everyone for Everybody

Her adage at work is to learn from one another, grow together as a team; in effect, get empowered and be a pathfinder! A daughter of an Army Officer, Sushma believes that honesty, loyalty and integrity towards one’s work and work place are values ingrained in her from childhood.

Here is an insightful tete-a-tete with Sushma:

1. What has been your experience working here at Alcor.
It’s just been an amazing journey! Each day has added something new in my development. The flexibility, training, accountability and empowerment I am exposed to, in my role, motivates me, while the approachability to the senior management, the continuous learning from team members, growing together as a team just makes each work day exciting and invigorating. This sense of continuous learning across hierarchies and verticals gives me a sense of pride and satisfaction.

2. Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian?
We have accomplished a lot in a short span of time! That’s a proud feeling for me. I joined 2.5 years back and the growth of this company, the potential for personal growth and the sense of ‘one-ness’ I get here, makes me proud and happy.

3. Tell us about a few defining moments of yours at Alcor.
The motivation to work here is every day- Speaks a lot about this company! In my consulting, customer facing role- a successful launch, kudos from a customer- all are defining moments. Early this year, at one of the Go-Lives, the customer talked about our work done for them adding value to their day to day operations- defining moment again! Middle of this year, I took ownership of HR service delivery at Alcor. With me getting trained, I trained a team, we as a team completed our certifications, we had to do a lot of self training and learning, had to do work shops with requirements and show excellence in my consulting role. The Management recognized my efforts. These instances motivate me to do more!

Hartaj Features In Alcor’s Employee Success Story | Congratulations!

Hartaj Kandola is Alcor’s Featured Employee of the month for October! Hartaj, Alcor Solutions’ ITSM Practice Manager believes that mentoring, training and helping people in all aspects of his life invigorate him to the core! His motivation at work stems from his training classes which he finds to be a creative process of empowering clients and people. A Martial Arts expert, a body boarding enthusiast and hiker, Hartaj leads a vegan fest initiative that’s attended by over 25,000 people in his community.
Here is an insightful tete-a-tete with Hartaj:
1. What has been your experience at work, here at Alcor.
I don’t differentiate between Alcor and me- my work life is like an extension of me! Of course, working here is exciting and challenging at times, but that’s the very richness of it all. The team atmosphere is, “Everybody helps everybody”! This is quite different from the earlier companies I’ve worked for. The leadership team is very easy to talk to and I can call someone up, vent out, discuss, without any fear or pressure. This company follows the ‘Open door policy’ on ground!

2. Why do you feel proud to be an Alcorian?
I feel a sense of belonging here- a sense of family here. It’s interesting, even if we are virtual, globally placed- it’s exciting to go to work! I am proud of and enjoy this sense of community we have built across our people in US, India and Canada.

3. What’s been that one defining moment for you at Alcor where you felt happy, successful and motivated?
There are a couple of defining moments 🙂
One was when a customer said – can you do this? Here, it was a creative process when, we as a team went around the task together and as one!
Another defining moment for me is when I do training classes with people at Alcor and clients. It’s an incredible feeling when you talk and empower customers, enable them to adopt technological innovations, mentor and get mentored! This give and take of knowledge reflects on the maturity and depth of thinking of the people at Alcor.
Here is one more! Alcor’s off shore team is hungry! Give them an idea and they are driven to do things.

4. Who is Hartaj?
The mountains and beaches- both excite me. I am an avid hiker and a body boarder. I have been training in the Sparing form of Taekwondo (a martial art) for many years now. I also lead a vegan fest initiative, which is attended by over 25,000 people in my community. Helping people motivates me hands down!

5. When you hear the word, Alcor- which 3 words strike you?
Team work
Fun
Change- Two days are never the same- that’s the excitement quotient here!

Thank you for talking to us, Hartaj! Cheers to many more accolades!

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence- Are they the same?

A couple of decades ago, self-driving cars, virtual assistants, and smart cities were things found only in science fiction movies. However, today the lines from the reel to the real are blurring. Technology that powers the fabled ‘Iron Man’ suit has made its way into our everyday lives, while hover boards, as seen in the famous ‘Back to the Future’ series, is soon going to be a reality. Technology has ensured that everyday objects become so interconnected and responsive that they achieve contextual understanding and improve the quality of our lives.

War Zone – 7 Cyber Security Attacks to Watch Out in 2018

2017 showed us that the cyber crime economy is growing rapidly and it is getting harder to keep pace with cyber hacks and effective vulnerability responses.  According to The Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report 2017, in 2016, “cyber crime cost the global economy over $450 billion…over 2 billion personal records were stolen and in the U.S. alone and over 100 million Americans had their medical records stolen”. We saw some of the worst ransom-ware attacks in 2017, NotPetya/ExPetr, WannaCry and Bad Rabbit being some of the worst kinds. Malware on the official Android app store managed to infect thousands of devices globally. Some of these compromised applications even contained Monero-mining scripts.
